Argentinian international Javier Mascherano joined Liverpool in January 2007 after the Premier League approved his transfer from West Ham.

The 22-year-old Argentinian international becomes the most high-profile of the Reds' transfer window signings and will offer Benitez more options in the centre of midfield.

He began his professional career with South American giants River Plate. Such was his potential that he earned an senior international call-up before kicking a ball for River. He'd already represented his country in both the FIFA Youth and Under-17 World Championships.

In 2004, Mascherano was part of the Argentina side which won gold at the Olympic Games.

The midfield anchorman moved to Brazilian club Corinthians the following year, immediately helping them to win the Campeonato Brasileiro.

By this time he'd become a regular international and, thanks to a series of fine displays in the 2006 World Cup, was known by football fans across the globe.

Mascherano's performances in Germany led to links with several of Europe's top clubs, though West Ham eventually clinched his signature alongside that of countryman Carlos Tevez.

He played just seven times for The Hammers before heading north to Merseyside.

Only the second player from Argentina to play for Liverpool following in the footsteps of Mauricio Pellegrino Gabriel Paletta made his name with Banfield, where the young centre-half came to the attention of the Liverpool scouts.

While the player agreed to join the Reds in February 2006, the transfer was actually sealed during the summer and Paletta moved to Merseyside in July, just in time to join his new team-mates for pre-season training.

A star player in Argentina's under-20 World Championship triumph in 2005, the highly-rated youngster arrived with a reputation for being a strong, decisive and robust defender.

Standing tall at over six foot and weighing in at 80kg, his services had been coveted by a host of top South American and European clubs and when Liverpool fans saw him play in a red shirt for the first time against Wrexham, it wasn't difficult to understand why he was such hot property.

Although new to English football and still only a teenager, Paletta looked like the strongest player on the pitch during Liverpool's first friendly of the new campaign.

While Paletta's tough-tackling style immediately won over the Liverpool fans, the Argentine's impressive debut came as no surprise to Rafael Benitez who was never in any doubt that his new signing would prove a success in English football. "I've worked with other Argentinian defenders in the past and there is a good tradition of tough, aggressive and tactically strong defenders from the country," claimed the Reds boss.

"Paletta is very tough and he's exactly the sort of player we need who will suit the Premiership. When you talk about the Argentinian defenders I worked with in Valencia, Paletta is more like Ayala than Pellegrino. If you're talking about Liverpool, he's more like Carra than Sami Hyypia."

Liverpool signed promising Argentinian defender Emiliano Insua on an 18 month loan deal in January 2007.

The teenage left back - who has represented his country at under 20 level - has arrived from Boca Juniors and signed a deal to keep him at Anfield until June 2008.

Insua made his first team debut during the 2-1 defeat at Portsmouth in April 2007.

"He is a good, young player with a lot of potential," said manager Rafael Benitez.

Insua's arrival is part of an ongoing strategy by Rafa Benitez to recruit elite youngsters from across the world and provide a stable foundation for the future of the club.
