Vieri all set for debut
Atalanta boss Stefano Colantuono has hinted that Christian Vieri will make his seasonal debut against Empoli on Wednesday.
The former Azzurri ace, who underwent knee surgery in November to recover from the problem which ruled him out of the 2006 World Cup, has not yet played for the Bergamaschi since his summer arrival.
Vieri returned to full training at the end of March and may now make his first official appearance for the Nerazzurri in the upcoming midweek round.
“He will come to Empoli with us and, if there will be the opportunity, I think he can make his debut,” said Colantuono.
“His knee is doing fine now and Professor Marc Maertens has also visited him to assess his condition.
“It is clear that he must recover his best physical condition and he will do so by returning to playing gradually,” added the tactician.
Vieri, whose last competitive match was last season for Monaco, has had a troubled couple of years due to a succession of injuries.
He returned to the peninsula last summer, signing a contract for Sampdoria, which however was terminated only weeks after putting pen to paper.
The former Juve striker then accepted a Bergamo switch in August, agreeing to a minimum wage deal worth just over £1,000 a month after dismissing rumours that he was to quit the game altogether.
