NSUA MAKES FIRST-TEAM PLEDGE
Jimmy Rice
05 March 2009

Emiliano Insua has pledged to do everything in his power to retain his place on the left side of Liverpool's defence. The 20-year-old returned to the starting XI in the 2-0 victory overSunderland on Tuesday following his spell with Argentina in the SouthAmerica U20 Championships.

Despite impressing during four consecutive starts over Christmas,Insua knows it won't be easy to hold down a regular place in the faceof competition from Fabio Aurelio and Andrea Dossena.

"It's a tough level because it's the best league in the world," thefull-back told LFC TV in his first television interview. " Playing forLiverpool is even tougher because this team always has to play to win.You also have many players who play for their national teams.

"But I came back from the tournament in South America two weeks ago and I'm back training with the first team.

"I'll just keep training hard and keep trying to show the boss that I'm good enough.

"It was a difficult decision for me to go away because I'd playedfour consecutive games but you have to say yes to the national team. Ispoke with Rafa and he told me to go.

"I missed some important games like Everton and Chelsea but now I have to think about the future.

"I've had a few games and I think I've done quite well. Playing with the first team has given me a chance to improve.

"The manager gave me a lot of confidence. He told me to keep calm when I play and afterwards he encouraged me to keep going."

Emiliano Insua  7  A steady performance from the youngster (SkySports)

well...

INSUA PENS NEW ANFIELD DEAL

Liverpool youngster Emiliano Insua has today put pen to paper on a new three year Anfield deal.
The Argentine full-back - who has made five first team appearances for the club - has signed a deal to keep him on Merseyside until June 2011.

The 19-year-old is a regular for his country's under-20 team and was a key performer in Liverpool's second string landing the league title last season.

5/8 INSUA TARGETS FIRST-TEAM SPOT
Emiliano Insua has set his sights on becoming Liverpool's first-team left-back after playing a key role in the Reserves' play-off win over Aston Villa last night.

The Argentinean defender, who made his first start of the season for Rafael Benitez's senior side against Manchester City last Sunday, enjoyed another eye-catching display up against Villa's experienced wideman Wayne Routledge.

It was a performance that once again highlighted the 19-year-old's vast potential and he is now hoping he can go on and emulate the reserves' treble winning feat, alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard and co.

"It was really good to be part of a young team which won something at Anfield because we all know what a special place this is," said Insua.

"I was lucky enough to play there for the first team against Manchester City and that has made me hungry for more.

"There are a lot of good young players at Liverpool and we all want the same thing – to play for the first team.

"I have done that but I want to do it more and more. The challenge for me now is to become a regular in the first team squad.

READ OUR EXCLUSIVE CHAT WITH THE BOSS

Three names that keep coming up are Emiliano Insua, Krisztian Nemeth and Damien Plessis. How do you see their progress?

I think Insua showed the other day that he's a good player; he knows his job and what to do as a full back. He is still young but already has some experience. Plessis showed against Arsenal what he can do. He is a big player with quality, so he can play and progress. Nemeth has not played with the first team yet but he is a player who has scored a lot of goals. He is very clever and you can see his movement. We are watching these and the rest.

Will these three have another year learning their trade for the reserves?

I think the idea will be for some of the reserve team to train with the first team and to be ready. Clearly some of them will be involved in more games (than this year). But, as I said before, some of them are very young and need to keep learning. But they are very close to the first team.

Moving on, what's the club's position regarding Lucas and Javier Mascherano playing in the Olympics in August?

It is two different things. Lucas is in the age range so we cannot say anything if he wants to play in the Olympics. It could be good for him. We need to analyse the position with Mascherano. I was talking with him today and we need to consider everything and then decide. We have time and maybe in a week's time we will decide.

INSUA: MY KOP DREAM
Jimmy Rice 03 May 2008

With Liverpool's quest for silverware over for another year, thoughts are turning to summer strengthening and who we may see in a red shirt next term.

Supporters who read the newspapers will see more names than the phone book being linked with a move to Anfield over the coming months, but one man desperate to play in front of the Kop won't have to travel too far.

Argentina starlet Emiliano Insua has been quietly earning nods of approval for Gary Ablett's title-winning reserves all season – and now he has his sights set on a first-team breakthrough.

After a substitute appearance at St Andrews last week, the 19-year-old is desperate for a home debut against Manchester City on Sunday as he looks to stake a claim for a regular place in the squad next term.

Insua said: "I really enjoyed the Birmingham game. It was great to be involved because when you are in the reserve team you always want to play for the first team and I was really happy to be given my chance.

"I have not played at Anfield yet and that is something I really want to do. It would be a dream for me to play at that fantastic stadium with the whole ground full and the supporters singing their songs.

"If it was to happen this season I would be really happy.

"I have watched many games there as a fan and the atmosphere is fantastic, so if I was given a chance to play at Anfield in the Premier League it would be a really big thing for me."

Insua, a product of the Boca Juniors youth team, impressed with his brand of attacking full-back play as the reserves strolled to Barclays Premier League North glory.

If he does make his Anfield bow on Sunday, he won't have to wait long to follow it up, with the reserves taking on Aston Villa in front of the Kop on Wednesday night in a bid to be crowned national champions.

After that Liverpool's second string will compete against Manchester United in the final of the Lancashire County Cup.

It's been quite a season for Gary Ablett's inexperienced side, and Insua claims there is now a real belief among the squad that many of them could follow in the footsteps of Damien Plessis by making the step up.

The left-back said: "The reserves have done very well this season and we have won our league, so all the players in the team have a lot of confidence.

"Quite a few new players were brought in last summer and we have improved a lot since then.

"It has been a great year for us and now we are all looking forward to the final.

"My aim is always the same though – to play in the first team. There are a lot of great players at Liverpool but my job is to show that I can play with them.

"To do that I have to work hard in training, in games and when I get a chance to play in the first team – like against Birmingham – I have to make sure that I am ready.

"Plessis played really well when he was picked against Arsenal and he also did well against Birmingham.

"When he made his debut against Arsenal all of his teammates in the reserve team were pleased for him, especially as he played so well.

"It also gave us hope because it showed that if you do well in the reserve team you have a chance of playing for the first team."

Having monitored Insua's development closely all season, Ablett is in no doubt that the teenage defender has the ability to make it at Anfield.

But he also believes his protégé will have to show much more than raw talent if he is to make the grade.

"I think that's up to Emiliano," he said. "He has the ability. He's just got to make sure that mentally he is right and he's prepared.

"The language can be a bit of a problem at times but he is coming along with his English. The manager can speak Spanish to him but I sometimes find it hard to communicate with him, but I do have the help of Angel (Vales) and Antonio (Gomez) to do that.

"He can go as far he wants to go, it's up to him. He has unquestionable ability – we've just got to make sure his mentality and his attitude are right before he goes and plays."

Fans' favourite Javier Mascherano is currently blazing a trail for Argentineans in the Liverpool side and Insua believes his compatriot's all-action style is typical of the South American country.

"We have a very determined way of approaching football and go into every tackle as if it's the last one we'll ever make," he said. "We really live for the game and give our all. It's total commitment and we absolutely hate losing.

"It's the way we are brought up – football in Argentina is viewed in a different way to most other countries.
"Both the players and the fans have that special feeling for it, an intensity I suppose you'd call it, and that shows when we take to the field."

Now Insua wants to live up to the high standards set by Mascherano by taking his chance at Anfield.

He said: "Signing for Liverpool was a fantastic moment and one I didn't expect at such a young age.

"Every Argentinean footballer sets out to play in Europe.

"I just want to make the most of the opportunity. I know how fortunate I am to be at one of the biggest clubs in the world."

3/21 OFICIAL INTERVIEW
WHAT'S IN A NAME: EMILIANO INSUA

Every home match Liverpool FC's official matchday programme ponders the question: 'What does a player's name say about their personality?'
It offers a quirky insight into life on and off the pitch with a whole host of random questions that inspire answers you won't find in your average football interview.

Here Emiliano Insua tells us who he is tipping for Euro 2008 success, why Jay Spearing is the hot-shot of the reserve team and who his favourite Latin lady is!

E EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS OR COPA AMERICA?

It's got to be the Copa. Obviously I'm from South America and if things go well in my career I might get to play in that competition one day. Winning it would be a dream come true.

WHO'LL TRIUMPH AT EURO 2008?

Not England obviously! (Laughs) Italy, or maybe Spain. There are a lot of Spaniards here at Liverpool, they've got a great squad and have been performing really well in recent months. But, as we all know, they have looked in good shape in the past only to stumble at the final hurdle. Maybe that won't happen this time.

M MUSIC
WHO DECIDES WHAT SONGS ARE PLAYED IN THE DRESSING ROOM BEFORE A RESERVE GAME?

Everyone takes turns choosing different tracks on the Ipod. It's generally English music, usually upbeat and high tempo. It tends to be rap or maybe hip-hop, something lively.

WHO'S TASTE IS SO POOR THAT THEY'RE NOT ALLOWED ANYWHERE NEAR THE IPOD?

I won't name any names but if someone puts on a particularly bad song it's usually changed pretty quickly. Any awful choices don't last long.

I INTELLIGENCE
WHO'S THE SMARTEST MEMBER OF THE RESERVE SQUAD?

I don't know about general knowledge but Mikel San Jose is an expert on football, or likes to think he is anyway. He sounds off and we have to listen. Sometimes he's right, sometimes he&'s wrong. But, no matter what, he just keeps talking.

L LATIN LADIES
WHO'S YOUR FAVOURITE SOUTH AMERICAN GIRL?

I've got a girlfriend so I can't really answer that! Let's say Shakira is a really good singer so I like her.

I INTERPRETER
WHO ACTED AS YOURS WHEN YOU FIRST ARRIVED HERE?

In training sessions Rafa Benitez and fitness coach Antonio Gomez helped me out. On a day-to-day basis my brother was here with me for the first few months and his English is really good so that made life easier. Now I'm able to speak the language so it's not so much of a problem.

A AGGRESSION
IS IT FAIR TO SAY ARGENTINIANS HAVE AN EDGE TO THEIR GAME?
Yeah, I think that's true. We have a very determined way of approaching football and go into every tackle as if it's the last one we'll ever make. We really live for the game and give our all. It's total commitment and we absolutely hate losing. It's the way we are brought up; football in Argentina is viewed in a different way to most other countries. Both the players and the fans have that special feeling for it, an intensity I suppose you'd call it, and that shows when we take to the field.

HAS THAT INTENSITY HELPED YOU ADAPT TO FOOTBALL IN ENGLAND?

It's definitely made it easier for me. If you can cope with the physical part of the game and improve as a player it can give you a chance of making it in this country.

N NATIONAL ANTHEM
CAN YOU SING THE ARGENTINIAN TUNE?

Yes. (Sings a few lines and then laughs) It's about a sacred cry of freedom for the mortal people. Unfortunately the tune is really long and before games it often has to be cut short. Obviously emotions run high when it's performed, particularly if it's an important match.

O OVAL-SHAPED BALL
HAS THE IMPRESSIVE PROGRESS OF THE ARGENTINE RUGBY UNION TEAM MADE
A BIG IMPACT BACK HOME?

There hadn't been huge attention focused on the Pumas until recently. Rugby is an amateur game in Argentina so everyone really appreciated the efforts of the players at last year's World Cup when they reached the semi-finals.

DID YOU WATCH ANY OF THEIR GAMES?

I never watch it. Although I enjoy the physical side of football I don't think I'd like rugby. It's a really tough sport but, to be honest, I'm not a fan.

I IDEAL INVITATION
IF YOU COULD GO TO ANY PARTY WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

If I was invited to the Ballon d'Or Awards as one of the nominees that would be pretty special. To win it would be even better although not many defenders ever get that honour. Or if Argentina won the World Cup I'm sure that party would be amazing, so either of those.

N NERVES
DO YOU SUFFER FROM THEM BEFORE GAMES?

No. Maybe when I was younger but not now. I think nerves only last for a few seconds as you come out onto the field and see the fans. As soon as the game starts they disappear pretty quickly. When I played for the first team against Portsmouth and Fulham last season I was more excited rather than nervous. It was positive energy and I couldn't wait for the matches to begin.

S SHOOTING
WHICH MEMBER OF THE RESERVE TEAM ALWAYS HITS THE TARGET?

That's easy, Jay Spearing. He's very accurate.

AND THE WORST?

Ronald Huth! Although he has scored a couple of times for the reserves when he smashed the ball into the net. I've only got one goal so far so I can't really criticise him too much. I do get plenty of chances but the goals never seem to come.

U U-20 WORLD CUP
WAS THAT TRIUMPH IN CANADA LAST YEAR THE FIRST MEDAL OF YOUR CAREER?

That was the first medal I've won as a professional. Hopefully I can add to it with the reserves this season.

DO YOU THINK THE ARGENTINIAN U-20S CAN GO ON TO CLAIM MORE CROWNS?

It would be nice to think we can progress together and enjoy future success at senior level. But history shows that it doesn't always work out like that. I think Argentina have won that particular title on six occasions now, including Maradona's team in 1979, but it hasn't always produced a World Cup winning side.

ARGENTINA ARE ALSO THE CURRENT OLYMPIC FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS. IS THIS SUMMER'S TOURNAMENT IN BEIJING A TARGET FOR YOU?

Sergio Batista, who was a member of 1986 World Cup winning team, is the manager and hopefully he will pick me. But it's very hard to say. There was a preparation game against Guatemala recently and the squad is mainly under-23 players with a few more experienced guys such as Javier Mascherano. It would be great to be involved.

A AIRMILES
YOU MUST CLOCK UP QUITE A FEW FLYING HOME TO PLAY FOR ARGENTINA?

Definitely, loads and loads. I've been travelling around the world to play football for nearly 11 years now. I think the first trip I went on was to Italy and since then I've been to France, Austria, Spain, America and Canada. They're all long journeys but I don't mind because it's a chance to represent my country abroad. Or if it's a home game it's an opportunity to get back to Argentina for a few days. Most people like going home to see their friends and family and I'm no different.

2/18
MOM
RESERVES HELD BY NEWCASTLE
Paul Hassall 18 February 2008

Liverpool were left to rue a whole host of missed opportunities as they were held to a goalless draw against Newcastle United at St James' Park.
Gary Ablett's men dominated for much of what was an entertaining encounter in the North-East but despite wave after wave of attack they could not find the goal that would have extended their winning run to six matches.

It means they are now six points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North, although they have played a game more than most of their title rivals.

It was a frustrating match for the young Reds, who could have enjoyed a very different evening had Emiliano Insua's surging run and shot after just 50 seconds found its way past the frame of Fraser Forster in the Newcastle goal.

It was a passage of play that set the tone for the remainder of the first period as the visitors dominated possession and created a succession of good chances without taking full advantage of their overall supremacy.

Indeed, they seemed to be revelling in the opportunity to play on such a grand stage and they carved out another good opening on seven minutes.

An incisive ball from Ryan Crowther put the in-form Krisztian Nemeth in on goal, but just as it looked like the Hungarian was about to add to the six goals he has plundered in his last four matches, he was thwarted by a last-ditch challenge from David Edgar.

It was all Liverpool at this point with Insua enjoying a lively evening down the left flank, and on 13 minutes there was a distinct sense of deja vu as he once again collected a flick from Brouwer and flashed a shot inches wide of the far post.

It was the best move of the half and one that reiterated the offensive qualities Insua could one day offer the first-team.

While the away side continued to create openings, Newcastle struggled to muster a chance of any real note throughout a very one-sided first-half and they were grateful to Forster for keeping them in the match.

The Magpies' keeper produced a magnificent save to keep out a Ray Putterill volley on 24 minutes before diving well at the feet of Brouwer, after the Dutchman was played in on goal by Nemeth.

Relieved to go in at the interval still on level terms, the hosts made a determined start to the second period and could have taken the lead on 47 minutes when James Troisi's deflected shot from distance wrong-footed Peter Gulacsi in the Liverpool goal and trickled just wide of the far post.

In stark contrast to the first-half, it was Newcastle who set the pace early on and after 53 minutes Gulacsi had to be alert to deny Ngo Baheng after he was sent in on goal.

It was a scare that seemed to spark Liverpool back into life and just shy of the hour mark Nemeth should have broken the deadlock.

Insua once again powered down the left and when he played a low ball into Nemeth you would have bet your mortgage on the little Hungarian continuing his recent hot-streak.

But it wasn't to be as Forster pulled off a sensational double save, first denying Nemeth's stabbed effort from six yards before getting his foot in the way of the rebound to deflect it up on to the crossbar and away to safety.

It just wasn't going to be Nemeth's day and he was left holding his head in his hands minutes later when he somehow contrived to lash his effort wide after a corner from the left fell to him at the far post.

Crowther, Brouwer and Insua then saw chances come and go as the Newcastle goal- with Forster imperious - lived a very charmed life and despite a late spell of pressure the Reds could not find that elusive winning goal.

Newcastle United Reserves: Forster, Morris, Kadar, Doninger, Edgar, Tozer, Godsmark (Lough 76), Troisi, Donaldson, Ngo-Baheng, Marwood.

Liverpool Reserves: Gulacsi, Darby, Insua, San Jose, Huth, Plessis, Crowther (Buna 76), Flynn, Brouwer (Simon 85), Nemeth, Putterill (Kelly 62).

Liverpoolfc.tv man of the match: Emiliano Insua: A superb attacking display down the left. Unlucky not to cap it with the winning goal.

btw

—¿Qué balance hacés del arranque en Inglaterra?

—¿De qué estás jugando?

—¿Qué es lo que más te sorprendió?

—¿Jugadores preferidos?

No, si figuras no faltan...

—¿Cómo es un día tuyo en Liverpool?

—¿Dónde vivís?

—¿Son muy estrictos?

—¿Seguís nuestro fútbol?
